"The Feminist Standpoint", Nancy C.M. Hartsock

  • In capitalism, women produce both production for wages and production of goods in the home
  • Marxist view limited, can't understand how women could sell labor power, produce commodities and surplus and also produce use value in home
  • Women work "double hours" compared to men, larger portion of time devoted to use value, greater degree of repetition (?) i.e. housecleaning or subsistence activities
  • "women's work" often depends on interpersonal skills similar to mothering (production of humans)
  • girls, because of female parenting, learn concrete relation to role. Boys relate to absent ideal.
