Section 1, Movements, Mikell

"African Feminism, Toward a New Politics of Representation", Gwendolyn Mikell
  • issue of hegemony, hostility to males by western feminism
  • African's women's movement is continuum that doesn't align with western Feminist continuum
  • dichotomy, educated seen as more theoretically advanced, rural women more parochial and pre-feminist
  • consensus in African feminism of tackling multiple oppressions by dealing with women as human beings rather than sexual
  • pragmatics of women's politics shaping African's women's movements:
Women participation in independence from colonialism only rewarded with increased male suppression. 1990's crisis/transition points have allowed disjuncture between sociocluture and modern politics to become visible, has encouraged women to pursue feminist politics.
