Section 2, Race and Nation, Dutt

"Some Reflections on US Women of Color and the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women and NGO Forum in Beijing, China", Mallika Dutt
  • Women of color discovered a sense of global pride, solidarity and affirmation in Beijing, the sense of siege in the US that pervades immigrants, welfare recipients, lesbians and communities of color was replaced by a connection with global "victim's" powerful voice for change
  • a central theme at the forum was the adverse impact on women of the globalization of the economy
  • women of color today seem more interested in organizing within their communities than across color lines, so efforts have been made to bring together the different communities
